With that said, you need to find a texture via online, free sources, stock, etc that you want to use as the surface of your planet. You can even steal a free to use picture of the moon's surface from the NASA website if you want.
Next, Take this new texture and open it up in a new tab/window.
THEN Go to
Edit>Define Pattern>
This is not a new layer, it's a completely new document.
Now, go back to the planet's tab that you're working on.
Make sure you have your brush tool selected and have the brushes TAB/WINDOW open. You can go to the menu bar and click Window > (and you should find brushes or something similar in name.) Make sure it's checkmarked/selected and now you can begin to work with the settings of the brush tool.
Now look at the image provided in the guide that says "Brush presets" and follow the settings in the image and now you should be able to continue with the tutorial.
Okay, I have the brush settings, but then I don't know what to do after that. You say in the tutorial "Using your brush tool you can begin to create the surface of the planet, Go up to your brushes tab." Which layer do you use the brush on? And which layer is the "texture" layer that you refer to? Haha also talking about layers... On the 6th page, there's a picture of Layer 1 being on top of Circle 2. But then on the next page, you say to create a layer underneath the one we just worked on, which I assume was Circle 2? So I'm confused where to put that layer.
....Can I just take a screenshot and send it to you somehow? orz
As for the brushing of the "surface/texture" just make a new layer for that specifically and place it at the very top.
Sorry if the tutorial is unclear, it wrote this over 2 years ago and it's not the best tutorial in the world.
Anyways, you'll find when you play with the ordering of the layers can sometimes create some different style of planets so really it's a matter of what you want it to look like for your needs.
I hope this helps!
Here's the link to the screenshots: [link]
Can you tell me what the point of layer Circle 1 is?
I took a quick glance, and correct me if I am wrong but I believe that is the atmosphere/slight glow that surrounds the planet to show reflective light and express that it is a sphere.
